The History of Roots and our Founder, Lenny Holtzman
Lenny Holtzman has 50 years experience as an innovator in the hair industry. He is a creative thinker and believes in innovative hair services such as chemical-free, all-natural “hidden lights”, promoting a clean environment and healthier clients through the use of chemical-free services and products, and in improving our hairdresser education system.
Also known as Lenny Curtis during the early years in his career, Lenny trained in Europe under a hairdresser apprenticeship program. For years, together with the office of State Representative Demetrius J. Atsalis, Lenny has been trying to get legislation passed to create hairdressing apprenticeships in the United States. (see the News & Events page for more info on this legislation.) After his apprenticeship in Europe, he began working in New York City for Paul Mitchell on Fifth Avenue for two years. At 19 years old, Lenny created a wig company called London Wiggery Ltd., expanding into 17 wig stores in Boston and New York. After selling London Wiggery Ltd., Lenny opened his first salon called “Hair I Am” on Charles Street in Boston. His second salon was on Newbury Street in Boston. Lenny came to the Cape in 1982. In the 80’s, Roots was located in Dunfey’s Hotel (now the Sheraton Hyannis). During that time we provided hair services for all the entertainers at the Melody Tent for ten years. Lenny also became the hair care provider for several high-profile clients and weddings, including many of the Kennedy family weddings. He expanded a one-chair salon into four chairs, and in 1985 he opened another shop. In the late 1980’s, the demand for Lenny’s services became increasingly overwhelming. Lenny also began introducing legislation to start apprenticeship programs in the United States, and continues today to be an advocate of excellence in hair care education.
In the early 1990’s, Lenny opened up a smaller hair salon in Centerville in a more discreet location called Tangles in an effort to contain and manage his overwhelming client base. In late 2009, as he began to look back on his 50-year career, he realized that he wanted to continue his innovative legacy by providing training and education to others in an effort to pass along his innovative knowledge and expertise in precision hair cutting and in his creative and unique “Hidden Lights” hair highlighting technique, using a chemical-free process and an innovative hair weaving method to create beautiful, stunning and natural-looking hair highlights. He also wanted to begin to carry organic hair care products as well as to carry his message of changing the hair industry from being the largest water polluter on Cape Cod to being environmentally friendly, by opening an eco-friendly hair salon that did not contribute to the Cape Cod water pollution problem, and by educating the public on the causes and concerns of the water quality problem on Cape Cod as well as the impact of carcinogenic products on our health. He also realized that after devoting 30 years to trying to change the hairdressing education system, his efforts were unheeded and that he needed stronger action to try to impact this corporate monopoly that continues to influence our education laws with paid lobbyists, and which is not doing justice to our hairdressing students of today and tomorrow.
In early 2010, in the spirit of teaching his innovative hairdressing methods to others, helping to create and promote a cleaner environment through using chemical-free hair services and products, and exposing and changing the shortcomings of the hair care industry’s education system, Roots Organic Salon was born. Today Roots is dedicated to these philosophies and causes and will continue to promote and support a cleaner environment, world class education, and healthier and happier clients through the use of chemical-free services and organic products and natural-looking hair highlighting.

We at Roots know and understand what it takes to develop and encourage expertise and how to help sustain the creative imagination with evidence-based inquiry-based, and problem solving-based thinking. For we know that innovation happens at the edges and interwoven intersections of disciplines. It can only happen when conventional wisdom is challenged, and all of our disruptive hypotheses are dissected, exposed and explored. Then and only then, can the possibilities of “what if” capture the mind and imagination.
